Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
