American Online Influencer Fined Following Mass E-Bike Ride on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales police have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and handed out two driving violation citations for reported negligent driving following a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A group of around 40 individuals riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the primary roadway of the bridge, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official the officer on Wednesday.

Police said they did not chase right away the riders out of concerns for public safety but rather found the assembly at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

Later in the week, authorities stated they had served the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), carrying a fine of $562 and penalty points per notice, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has over 3.4m subscribers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on Instagram.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure spoke with a major newspaper this week after the incident spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was among the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

National Debate on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of e-bikes on roads nationwide has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes since the invention of the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," the minister said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are granted the authority to take strong action, to confiscate them, to crush them, to destroy them."

NSW reported 226 injuries associated with electric bikes in 2024. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
