Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on undesired offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by world leaders on official trips. The diverse haul could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. A date has not been finalized, although the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts are currently locked away in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away for years.

A complete inventory remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was reviewed by officials. The discussion raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
