Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The recorded message, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in defense or security capacities.

"Like us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to follow commands that break the statutes or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Reply

The clip reportedly provoke a heated reaction from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our country with great patriotism and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he causes harm," the declaration stated.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The officials who participated in the video also released a statement.

"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this United States and took an vow to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the national charter and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the ex-president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."

Additional Governmental Reactions

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."

He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the legislature instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."

The GOP official also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and determine all that."

White House Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."

"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the president's legal commands."

She added: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
