Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
