The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
