The President Welcomes Loved Ones of Shot National Guard Members to White House
President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has invited the family of a Guard member fatally shot last week to attend the presidential home.
He added that he spoke to her parents and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Event
Specialist Beckstrom, 20, was lost her life in a attack on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Vigils across the state have taken place in their honor.
Presidential Call
The president said he’s talked about a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both individuals of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a difficult moment, visit the White House. We’re going to honor her,” the president informed journalists. “And similarly with Andrew, whether he recovers or not.”
Community Reaction
Community members assembled over the weekend at a local school in the state to pay respects to Sarah.
Both she and Wolfe had been serving with the military unit as part of Trump’s government program to assist policing efforts in Washington DC.
Honoring the Soldier
“She was the kind of student that instructors wished for. She behaved with quiet strength, a bright grin and a positive energy that lifted people around her,” the principal, the leader of Beckstrom’s former high school, stated to the press. “She was caring, compassionate and always willing to assist people.”
Service arrangements for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Judicial Actions and Government Changes
Authorities have indicted a 29-year-old suspect with a charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The incident prompted the government to pause asylum applications and cease issuing visas to holders of travel documents.
Condition of the Airman
Andrew Wolfe, a native of the city, began his service in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of his local high school, per the AP.
He remains under medical supervision and is “battling to survive”, West Virginia leader Morrisey stated on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
The state’s top lawyer Pam Bondi stated on a news show that she aimed to meet with the family.
Legacy of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County high school in June 2023 and enlisted soon after, working as a MP with excellence, per the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she definitely had bravery,” Morrisey told the audience at the memorial. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has created a legacy that’s going to be remembered always.”
